Wedding Photography | Frequently Asked Questions

What are the benefits to hiring a professional photographer?

A professional wedding photographer will arrive promptly to your wedding and get your photos back to you within a timely matter. A professional will dress appropriately and have the right equipment ensuring your precious moments will be captured. A professional photography lab will be used to get maximum quality, color and exposure so that you receive the best results possible. Finally a professional will be at ease in high stress situations, they will be able to blend in with the crowd and not distract from you, and they will be able to handle change without worry.

What can I do to ensure great wedding photos?

1. Hire a professionally trained quality photographer you trust. Don't be tempted to hire students who do wedding photography on the side. Find a photographer who's work you love. It won't matter how much you save if you wind up with bad photo's or no photo's at all.

2. If you are having your wedding outside during the day have the ceremony in the shade. Sun light is least flattering mid day, and is more appealing in the early morning or late afternoon/early evening.

Contracts

The mere word can strike fear into a person's heart. That's funny because contracts are designed to protect people. It is in your benefit to make sure there will be a contract, and you should ask for your own copy. Compare it to other companies' contracts. If your photographer is legitimate they should have no problem with this. If you don't feel comfortable with your photographers contract or you don't understand it, be sure to ask questions. You should feel comfortable with your wedding photographer.

Our wedding contract is designed to protect our customers as well as ourselves. It insures our dedication to your wedding date. What happens if your photographer becomes seriously ill or suffers an injury the day before your wedding day? Does your wedding contract insure you an appropriate replacement photographer? Ours does.

Why should I choose Robyn Malter Photography?

I love shooting weddings! That sounds cheesy right? But it's true, I literally count down the days until the film gets developed. Unlike many studios, I personally photograph every wedding, so you know that you'll receive the same high quality photography at your wedding. All of our packages include the negatives or digital files without an extra fee. Also we have invested in all the equipment - film cameras, high-end professional digital cameras, portable studio lighting, etc. - so that you get the best possible photographs under virtually any conditions.

Where are you located?

In 2007 Robyn Malter Photography moved from sunny Santa Barbara to the heart of San Francisco!

However, that has not stopped the couples who were simply elated with our photography from referring us to their friends. We love visiting that part of California anyway, so we are willing to commute any where along the coast from San Francisco to San Diego.

Having your wedding in an exotic location?
Ask us about it, we love to travel!

What steps can I take to ensure my photographer is not running the show the day of my wedding?

When you are signing your contract, either include a shot list or discuss one with us. This lets us know what photographs or moments are important to you. Also, go over the timeline of your event with us. Discuss how much time you’re willing to spend on posed or formal shots on your big day, if you don’t want to spend a lot of time on formal shots then perhaps a little trimming on your shot list is in order. But do plan on spending some time with your photographer to get your formal shots taken.

How much time will you spend at my wedding taking pictures?

How much time we spend at your wedding depends on you and what kind of coverage you want.

Our packages include enough time (six hours) to cover

The Bride and Groom getting ready
The Ceremony
The Reception, Cake Cutting and the Garter and Bouquet toss
with time for formal portraits between The Ceremony and the Reception

However, we understand that every wedding is different and that where some couples want pictures of everything others find that intrusive. We will sit down with you and get a feel for what kind of pictures you want to have and can adjust your package accordingly.

Who will be shooting our wedding/event?

Robyn Malter and her partner Shalaco Sching will be the photographers shooting your wedding or event. We have years of experience shooting with each other which allows us to work seamlessly together. We believe in building relationships and trust with our customers. Because weddings are intimate occasions, we want you to feel safe knowing that you can trust us to be there for you. When you work with Robyn Malter Photography, you won’t have to worry about a strange photographer showing up the day of your event.

Do you shoot in color or black and white?

That is up to you. We let you decide if we shoot color, black and white, sepia, or black and white with a touch of color. We find most people prefer a combination of all of the above.

What is the difference between shooting film vs. digital?

As far as quality is concerned the difference is only noticeable to the trained eye. Film allows the user more error flexibility with exposure and lighting. Digital cameras are more precise and technically demanding. We can use either professional digital or film cameras.

What style of photography do you shoot?

We shoot a combination of both formal and candid photography.
A style that is commonly called Photojournalistic Photography.
This gives your wedding a timeless look.

We come from fine arts and photojournalist backgrounds.
Our versatility in styles works well to compliment any wedding or event in a timeless fashion. We pride ourselves on our range of styles and will sit down with you to get a feel for how you want to remember your special day.

What are the benefits of having two photographers
at my wedding/event?

A second photographer can catch moments that would otherwise be overlooked by the main photographer. They pay attention to detail and capture candid moments while the main photographer shoots the event. This allows for a well-rounded coverage of your special day, for example: while the main photographer takes pictures of the bride getting ready, the second photographer is free to focus on the groom preparing for the wedding.
